Julien-François Gerber

PhotoShort bio: Julien-François Gerber is currently Assistant Professor at the Royal University of Bhutan in Kanglung. Prior to that, he was Assistant Professor at TERI University and Fellow at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Advanced Study, both in New Delhi (2012-2014), and Visiting Fellow at the Department of Economics, Harvard University (2010-2012). He holds a M.Sc. in Natural Sciences (ecology) from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, a M.A.S. in Development Studies from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, and a Master’s and Ph.D. in Environmental Studies (ecological economics) from the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

Julien-François is interested in economic anthropology, political ecology, socio-ecological economics and development studies, as well as in the relationship between science and activism. He did fieldwork in Cameroon, Ecuador and Indonesia on aspects of the expansion of capitalism (property-credit nexus, agrarian change, resistances). His current theoretical research is on the integration of knowledge in “sustainability” and “development” studies.
